Stay-At-Home Versus Boarding
Doggie daycare and boarding facilities have grown in popularity over the past several years. Some of these facilities are very good and others are not so good. Some pets thrive in a group environment and some don't. Every pet family is unique and the choice to stay-at-home or board is a personal one.
Many pet owners prefer to leave their pets at home while they are away for a variety of reasons some of which include:
- Pets feel more comfortable and secure in their own environment
- Daily routines including feeding, sleeping and potty times are not disrupted
- Pets can become stressed when placed in a new environment with unfamiliar people and animals coming and going
- Pets are potentially exposed to more illness and injury in a group setting

DAILY VISITS
This is our most popular service for people who want a mid-day walk and potty break for their dog while they are at work.
Daily visits will be customized to suit the needs of you and your pets. Depending on your dog's age, size, activity level and the weather, we will provide your dog with exercise, routine care and lots of love!

60 minutes - $25.00
Rates for 1-2 pets; additional pets charged at $3.00 per pet per visit.

OVERNIGHTS
Going out of town and prefer your dog stay at home where he is comfortable, safe and secure in his routine? Enjoy peace of mind knowing your "baby" will be well cared for by Scalawags. We understand boarding facilities don't work for everyone, so we offer two stay-at-home options:
Option #1
Scalawags will break up your dog's day with regular check-ins and will tend to all of his needs throughout the day. We recommend a minimum of four 30-minute visits per 24-hour period...1) morning wake-up, 2) mid-day, 3) dinner time and 4) bed time.
30 minutes four times per 24-hour period - $60.00
60 minutes four times per 24-hour period - $100.00
Rates for 1-2 pets; additional pets charged at $3.00 per pet per visit.
Option #2 (not available on holidays) - Please note we are not accepting any new clients at this time for overnight stays.
Concerned your pup is going to really kick up his paws while you are away? Uncomfortable leaving your pet (and home) alone all night? A Scalawags Sitter will be happy to spend the night at your home to keep your best friend company and to make your home look lived in. We recommend a minimum of two additional visits during the day...1) mid-day and 2) dinner time.
Overnight Stay (guaranteed minimum stay is 9pm-7am) - $55.00 (1-2 pets; additional pets charged at $5.00)
Additional Daily Visits charged at standard rates.
Each visit includes excercise/play time, cuddle time, water change, feeding/treats, and "tuck-in".
While You Are Away
Upon request, Scalawags will perform the following tasks at no additional cost so your house has a more "lived-in" look while you are away:
- Watering houseplants
- Bringing in mail and newspapers
- Bringing garbage and recycling to the curb
- Adjusting lights and window shades/curtains

FIELD TRIPS
Remember when you were a kid and how excited you got about school field trips? Well just like kids, dogs need a change in their routine once in a while. That's why Scalawags has put together some fun Field Trips for your Scalawags.
Field Trips include transportation to and from our destination and refreshments, and our usual cuddle time, water change, feeding/treats, and "tuck-in" for up to two dogs.
Sorry, but we do not schedule Field Trips on holidays.
THE KENNEBUNKPORTER
Give your dog a break from the routine of neighborhood walkies with a walking tour of Kennebunkport. Your dog may walk around the village one day, down Ocean Avenue another or venture into Lower Village for a walk down Beach Avenue on yet another. This walk even includes a stop at Scalawags for "refreshments"!

THE KENNEBUNKER
Perhaps your dog would prefer to stroll around downtown Kennebunk. Scalawags is happy to oblige with a walk through town and stroll around Rogers Pond.

Recommended for dogs who need lots of excercise.
Available mornings, afternoons and evenings, 7 days a week.
THE BEACHCOMBER
If your dog can't get enough of the beach, then this is the outing for her. We will pick your dog up and head to the nearest beach for some seaside fun. We will walk, swim, fetch and sniff our way along the shore until your girl is tuckered out and ready for a nap.

THE PLAYER
Is your dog a social butterfly? If so, we can bring your dog to the Kennebunk Dog Park for some supervised, off leash play time. Your dog will make new friends while getting some good exercise.

THE TRAIL BLAZER
Let us stimulate your dog's senses with an invigorating walk along the Carson Trail. We'll walk around this gravelly scenic trail through marshlands while enjoying the scent of Maine pines and coastal breezes. Your dog will enjoy a change of scenery while getting some fresh air and good exercise.

SPA DAY
Does your dog need a bath but you don't have the time or energy? Let us take your pup to a local do-it-youself dog wash and bathe her for you. We don't mind getting wet and we'll bring home a very clean and pampered dog. Door-to-door pick-up and drop-off service included.

VISITORS
Planning a trip to The Kennebunks with your dog? Be sure to visit Scalawags' "Kennbunkport" pages for information on pet-friendly lodging, activities, and other pet-friendly resources.
While planning your trip, don't forget to think about potential pet care needs you may have while visiting. Perhaps you want to enjoy a leisurely dinner out or an afternoon at the beach or a day trip to Freeport for some power shopping. We can even help care for your dog during wedding events when your dog may be included in some activities but not all of them. Many of our local lodging establishments are pet-friendly however, they typically have house rules about leaving your pet alone.
If you anticipate needing pet care while you are visiting The Kennebunks, call Scalawags prior to your arrival to make arrangements. We will be happy to discuss your needs and to complete the necessary paperwork before you arrive in town. Our Pal-Around Program has been created specifically for our "away friends".
Pal-Around Program
Since Scalawags does not operate a traditional group pet daycare, our "Pal-Around Program" pairs your pet up with a dog walker for extended periods of time at a discounted rate.
We'll pal around with your best friend for as long as you need us to do so. Our time together will be customized to meet your pet's specific needs and can include excerise and play time, some R&R and of course lots of cuddling. Just tell us what your dog likes to do and take off knowing your buddy will be well cared for by us.

- 30 minutes - $15.00
- 1-3 hours - $25.00 per hour
- 4+ hours - $22.00 per hour (you will be charged $25.00 for the first 3 hours and then $22/hour for each additional hour)
- Rates for 1-2 pets; additional pets will be charged at $3.00 per pet per 30-minute visit or hour for one or more hours of service.
Important Travel Tips
- Make your lodging reservations early! Many pet-friendly establishments have limited accommodations, so you don't want to wait until the last minute to confirm availability.
- When you make your lodging reservations, ask about their pet policy including rules about leaving the pet alone in the room and what pet amenities the hotel provides.
- Review your pet's medical records as early in the trip-planning process as possible so you have time to schedule a vet appointment, if necessary.
Make sure your pet's ID tags are up to date and the tags are securely attached to your dog's collar or harness.

- Food (we recommend packing extra servings just in case you are away from home longer than anticipated or something unforeseen happens)

SPECIAL SERVICES
Scalawags knows "one size does not fit all" so we are happy to customize a pet care service to fit your family's needs. Here are some situations which may require a customized plan:
- Arrival of a new puppy
- Senior or special needs dogs

- Weddings or other special events (you may want your dog to participate in some activities but not all of them)

Pet Taxi Service
Scalawags is also happy to help transport your pet if you can't do it. Trips to and from the veterinarian, groomer, daycare facility, or other location may be arranged.

CAT CARE
All of our regular services include cats but if you need cat care only we are happy to help! We are available to come to your house for one or two visits per day to not only play, but feed, scoop and administer any medications needed.

If you would like your pet to become a "Scalawag", you will need to register with us before we can perform any service. Follow the instructions below for RESIDENTS or VISITORS to become a Scalawag!
RESIDENTS
We require all residents, year round or seasonal, wishing to use our services schedule a "meet and greet" to officially register with Scalawags for pet care. During this complimentary meeting we will discuss your pet family's needs, complete paperwork, pick up keys and schedule services, as needed. We strongly suggest you schedule a meet and greet well in advance of your first service appointment. This will ensure we have time to follow up on any outstanding paperwork.
If you need Overnight care while you travel, please book early. We do our best to accommodate last-minute requests but cannot guarantee Sitter availability.
Each pet family will be required to complete the following documents:
- Service Agreement (Scalawags Policies & Guidelines)
- Client Profile (general owner, home, vet and emergency contact information)
- Pet Profile (one for each pet)
- Veterinarian Authorization
Scalawags will also require:
- Rabies Certificate - Copy of current rabies certificate for each pet.
- Two sets of keys - One will be used by your Sitter and the other set will be kept in a secure location in our office.
VISITORS
Scalawags is happy to provide the same high quality and safe pet care for Visitors as we do for local Residents. To achieve this level of service we do have to take the time to get to know you and your pets. We can do this before your visit or upon your arrival but it does need to get done.

- Hotel Key - If you would like Scalawags to spend time with your pet at your hotel while you are away, we will need a room key and request you notify the hotel's front desk that a Scalawags Sitter will be caring for your pet.

RATES
Current rates are included with service descriptions. All rates are effective May 2010 and are subject to change. Limits on the number of pets per service may apply so please call to discuss your specific needs.
Initial Meet & Greet with key exchange is complimentary for local residents requiring ongoing service. Additional meetings or key pick ups/drop offs will be charged at $15 per half hour. Visitors will be charged for a "meet & greet" at the rate of $7.50 per 15 minutes.
Our holiday rate is 1.5x our standard rates. Not all services are available on holidays. Our holiday schedule is listed below.
Gratuities for your Sitter are permitted and appreciated. Gratuities should be paid separately.
PAYMENTS
We accept cash and checks. A $25.00 fee per returned check applies.
Residents requesting daily or consistent (e.g., three daily visits per week) pet care services will be invoiced weekly. Cash and check payments may be left for the Sitter to pick up or may be mailed to Scalawags, PO Box 818, Kennebunkport, ME 04046. Your Sitter will leave you a receipt for all cash payments. A late fee of $5.00 will be applied to any unpaid balances after 30 days.
Overnight care for Residents is paid 25% at the time of booking and the balance must be left for the Sitter upon their arrival for the first appointment.
Visitors will be required to pay for all services in cash at the time of service or to pre-pay via credit card.
CANCELLATION POLICY & DEPOSIT FOR OVERNIGHT CARE
We request 24 hours notice if canceling or rescheduling a daily (excluding overnight care) pet care visit, otherwise payment is due in full.
Residents requesting overnight care while traveling will be charged a 25% non-refundable deposit at the time of booking to reserve your Sitter. If you cancel within 4 days of your scheduled pet service, you are responsible for paying 50% of the entire fee.
Sometimes things come up that take up an unexpected amount of time for our pet sitters to handle. We will be glad to accommodate these needs when we can, with the expectation that the additional time will be reimbursed. Obviously, this would not include situations that we cause ourselves! Pet illness, pet misbehavior (not coming back inside or going into crates), cleaning up unanticipated pet messes and "mistakes", and other activities may cause us to spend an undue amount of time in your home. Please understand that any necessary additional time will be billed to you upon your return.
HOLIDAYS
If you need pet care over a holiday, please call Scalawags to confirm availability and rates. Our holiday schedule includes:
- Memorial Day Weekend (May 25-27)
- July 4th (July 3-5)
- Labor Day Weekend (August 31 - September 2)
- Thanksgiving (November 27-28)
- Christmas - New Year's (December 23 - January 2)
